i felt at least seven different emotions while listening to drew flippin’s debut solo album, none of which i wish to describe here. but let’s just say i needed some serious alone time when it was over, so i took off to a small, desert town in new mexico where i laid in a sensory deprivation chamber for weeks. unfortunately, i could not rid my mind of his sounds, and emerged even more emotionally destroyed than when i went in. drew’s music fuses all our favorite genres- trip-hop, flamenco, cowpunk, folktronica, shiverpop and skwee- in such a way that you’ll never be able to listen to anything else again. and yet, his tunes are so simple- i was moved by the simplicity of the music, and the simpleton that made them. i didn’t understand a word, but i enjoyed every moment. i’m going to stop typing now so i can listen to this song about the former capital of australia again- lots of learning to do.

"all pity. no party." is 8 intimate and pathetic stories of people who have indulged the worst parts of their brain – spiraling thoughts, disorientation, paranoia, manipulation, self-pity – songs blending from one vignette of a poor sap to another. i wrote and played everything on it in my studio apt in ukrainian village, chicago. less
